ISM university building, Vilnius

At the beginning of the year, the ISM University of Management and Economics moved to the historic Central Post Office building on Vilnius Gediminas Avenue. Audiotonas was entrusted with an important part of this project – to design and install the audiovisual systems of the auditoriums and other spaces of the building according to the trends followed by modern higher education institutions around the world. First of all, these are hybrid, distance learning options for those studying at a distance, as well as technologically advanced solutions for “live” lectures inside the building, various academic events and simply effective daily work of the academic community.

Although many different audio, video, lighting, HVAC technologies are implemented in the project, from the user’s point of view (student or teacher), the centralized management of this technology is very simple. This is an excellent example of how systematic planning of technological needs and selected appropriate technical solutions can create a particularly modern and fully user-friendly space adapted to the specific needs of higher education.

Hybrid training equipment

All university auditoriums and classrooms are equipped with equipment for hybrid lectures, creating opportunities for immediate participation of remote students in lectures. Moving video cameras are used in the rooms, which automatically follow the teachers as they move around the room, choosing the most optimal image zoom. In larger spaces, even several cameras are used, and the image displayed by them can be controlled manually with the operator’s control panel if necessary.

Hybrid equipment also combines an automated microphone and sound system in each room, as well as video projectors or screens. All spaces provide convenient ways to connect computers to the system, making it very easy to get started with your brought device, and ensure that any video source you use will be visible to both in-the-room and remote participants.

Video technologies

Depending on the size of the room, each teaching space is equipped with video systems of different sizes. Large auditoriums use one or even several high-brightness laser projectors and motorized video projection screens with a special surface that makes the image even brighter and more contrasty. The projector screen is automatically rolled up when not in use. For additional visibility, image duplicating monitors are installed in the middle of the largest spaces, and 2 low-profile monitors (prompters) are installed in the large auditorium for the convenience of teachers to duplicate the image visible on the computer.

Smaller classes are equipped with large-format touch-enabled displays. With these displays, it is possible to control content like a normal touch screen, as well as to write (as on a blackboard), to digitize notes.

It is possible to virtually combine or separate the video systems of different spaces of the building into separate parts, using a video signal switching matrix, which allows video signals to be routed or duplicated in various configurations.

Sound technologies

Considering the size and specifics of each teaching space, several different PA solutions were chosen: column-array, point-source, soundbar-type acoustic systems. Since, as in the case of video switching, it is possible to combine the sound of the building’s spaces in various combinations, the audio signal distribution is digitized and works on the basis of the Dante network.

Each space is equipped with wireless microphones: head-mounted, clip-on, hand-held. Teachers use these microphones even in small classrooms where sound reinforcement is not required, as the microphones are also needed to provide audio for remote lecture participants.

Management of auditoriums and classroom equipment

Since many different systems (audio, video, ventilation, lighting) are used in each teaching space of the university, a centralized control system is installed to manage them all. The automated control of all system elements is performed by the processor, and touch-controlled panels are installed in the room, which graphically present the “scenarios” for the use of the room for quick and simple control. For example, when the teacher comes to the audience, he can choose the “presentation” scenario, and this turns on the video projector in the room, lowers the projection screen, turns on the sound system and microphones, dims the bright lights, closes the blinds on the windows, and switches the ventilation system to silent mode. In the same way, with a few touches of the control panel, it is possible to reconfigure the room for other purposes or finish work – all equipment will be turned off.

Digital signage and background sound system in common areas

The common spaces of the university (corridors, WC, reception) are equipped with a background sound system and a digital signage video screen system that can display relevant information. In addition, a centralized management and monitoring system for all auditoriums is provided for monitoring and remote control of the equipment condition of all auditoriums.

Reservation system

Since the university has many different spaces for work, training and meetings, the building has a reservation system that creates an interactive availability calendar for each space. In this way, available spaces are used more efficiently, teachers and students can reserve desired spaces for group work, meet-ups and other needs. The reservation system is controlled by panels located in the premises, and it is also possible to reserve rooms remotely or directly at the reception desk.

LED screen in the event space

The university’s main event space is equipped with a semi-mobile high-resolution LED screen. The dimensions of this screen reach 4.8 x 2.7 m, the brightness is 600 nits. LED elements are covered with a special epoxy surface (GOB technology), which will protect the screen from minor damages. Next to the LED screen, column-array type acoustic systems are installed from the edges. The screen is mounted on a transport frame (on wheels), which allows the structure to be moved from one place in the room to another.
